Fastball Grip for a Softball - Kimberly-Edwards.com

Fastball Grip for a Softball - Kimberly-Edwards.com The very first thing I like to go over when coaching young softball pitchers is to address how they grip their fastball and explain to them the reasons why the grip I teach works.

The horseshoe, two-seam grip is what is most beneficial when throwing a proper fastball with proper technique.

This is the place to begin…How you hold the ball. You can gain much speed simply by gripping the ball in the most advantageous manner available for a fastpitch softball pitcher.

Check out this softball video tutorial here:

The reason this works so well is because when seams hit the air around them while spinning towards home plate, they can work like mini-brakes in the air. The last thing you want to do is put the brakes on with your fastball, right? Right!

So, instead of the typically taught 4-seam grip that allows 4 seams to spin in the air on the way to home plate, this grip will give you only 2-seams interacting with the air as it hurls towards home plate. Thus, increasing your speed in a real way.

Simple, right? I think so…

Also, I feel as though it gives me better control as the horseshoe with the 2-seam spin fits to the shape of the arch of my fingers better, giving me a better grip. This is especially helpful when you are trying to throw in wet, rainy conditions.

Try it out – you’ll be glad you did!
