Tired of Seeing Unhealthy Food in Stores?
2009
I AM! More than I could even explain to you!
I’m glad that we’re really starting to see manufacturers of food giving us alternative choices, not just low-cal options either.
I mean for people who have limitations in their diet for Sodium and Salt intake, or whether they have high cholesterol, are obese or shouldn’t have sugar or refined flour and other ingredients, there are more choices out there.
Why am I being so “funny” about this?
I guess I’m being funny because 1 in 3 children are obese or overweight now in the USA. Probably because more people are dying of illnesses that could be “fixed” with food.
I eat a very healthy diet, and when I eat “packaged” or “processed” food, it is uncommon. I don’t put salt on my food or consume excess sodium, knowingly.
However, I just got rid of a kidney stone that was 3 mm – pretty darn big for them…
Yes, I know that the packaged food I do eat probably has some type of nutritional facts that I could have read. Yes, you should always take responsibility for your own health and diet.
Although, when traveling, it is quite a bit more difficult to eat in a healthy way, especially eating out…You don’t really know what they put in or how much, or what preservatives or what have you.
Now, I must become an expert on salt – in all shapes and forms – that I am ingesting or might ingest.
High salt intake can cause a number of health problems, such as hypertension, kidney and gall stones, risk of stomach cancer and a whole host of other issues.
However, low salt intake can cause just as many problems, if you don’t get enough of it, as it is an essential mineral for your body to function properly.
* For more information on the policy paper that The Grocery Manufacturers Association just released on salt and sodium in our food – it’s all about what salt is, why it’s important, why it’s bad, why it’s used, how it’s used, labeling issues and everything in between!
The thing is, we fund the industry…We, as a nation, are eating these unhealthy foods…
If food manufacturers were making money feeding us healthy food, they would make more of it…However,t he vast majority of sales are from the full salt, full flavor, full preservatives, full fat foods that we can’t wait to consume on a regular basis.
Be an informed consumer and an advocate for your own health – Without your health, you have no life.

Hi Kim,
I try to eat lots of vegetables and fruits, avoid meat, milk and processed foods, still to learn 😉
Funny you should mention salt. I was recently diagnosed with border line high BP and the first thing that the Doc told me was to STOP using table salt. Table salt, Sodium Chloride, is one of the most common contributors to Hyper tension.
It took me about a week to totally kick the salt habit.
Bad salt, bad.
Thanks Kimberly
I know it…We usually get plenty of it in the food we eat that we don’t have to add additional salt…
Packaged food is full of this stuff…Did you know there’s more salt in a box of corn flakes than there is in a bag of chips? Seriously…is that necessary???
Kimberly 🙂
I know it Harvey…
So many of us are really trying to eat healthier…We have to go back to the basics of food…
Vegetables and fruit – especially raw, avoid meat or at least eat organically raised, free range variety, as well as milk.
Reducing processed foods is the perfect start, in my opinion!!!
Kimberly 🙂
Great information Kim…People for so long thought they could eat anything…DAh…They use to work physically harder & their bodies demanded more…These days people are not as active & need to listen to their body much more and therefore they need all the info they can get…
I agree Hiqutipie!
People used to work harder and that would burn their calories and would flush their bodies of the bad stuff they were eating, for the most part…
Nowadays, we don’t really know what we’re getting ourselves into…Not exercising and continuing on the same path with food is destroying our health and fitness…
Great comment, and thanks for coming by from Stumble Upon!!! You rock!
Kimberly 🙂
That’s not a good thing Acen8s!
In fact, that really sucks…As you know I had a kidney stone last year and that was excrutiatingly painful – caused probably mostly from salt in my diet, even though I don’t use a lot of salt…
We get enough salt in our diet from things we eat without having to add more…And when you stop adding so much salt to the foods you eat, the less you’ll crave it to the point where you don’t even miss it at all…for me anyway!
Salt was easy to reduce out of my diet!!!
Thanks for coming by from Stumble Upon too!
Kimberly 🙂
Hi Harvey…
Yes, I think it’s a learning process our entire life and we learn more and more from science every day, it seems…
Your formula seems to be fabulous – fruit, veggies, less meat, dairy and processed foods…
I think you’re doing better than most and you’re well on your way to good health Harvey!

I am really frustrated at all the bad ingredients in foods these days. It’s almost impossible for example to find a salad dressing without High Fructose Corn Syrup, Maltodextrine, Monosodium Glutamate or other nasties.
If only there were more options for buying healthy produce at a reasonable price.
Great observation Tony!
You’re much further ahead of the game than most people that don’t read the labels!
I completely agree with you there…it’s difficult to find good products without all those “baddies” inside of them!
Have you checked out my cooking site?
It’s CookingWithKimberly.com – You’ll find a lot of easy to prepare recipes, so you can eat healthier and won’t have to purchase those packaged foods with the nasty ingredients in them – or at least you can reduce having to…
Kimberly’s Easy & Tasty Vinaigrette Dressing:
1 part Vinegar (of your choice – I love using balsamic, red wine vinegar, apple cider…)
2 parts Olive Oil
1 clove Garlic – crushed or minced
1/2 – 1 tsp Italian Seasoning – mixture of oregano, basil, parsley, a bit of thyme
1/2 tsp Mustard Powder – or double the mustard – I like to use the powder, but when using wet mustard, I often use Dijon
1-2 tbsp Honey or Jam – whatever flavor you’d like – honey is more neutral, but you can make a mean blackberry vinaigrette or similar!
Freshly Cracked Black Pepper – To taste
Sea Salt – To taste
Prepare vinaigrette, by whisking in a bowl, with vinegar, olive oil, mustard powder, pepper, Italian seasoning, honey, jam, and garlic.
Serve on salad, over pasta or use to marinate meat or make a sauce!
Hope you enjoy this recipe Tony!
